ACC Football Championship History

The ACC played its inaugural title game in 2005, following the additions of Miami, Boston College and Virginia Tech as members of the conference. The ACC title game features the winner of the Atlantic Division of the conference facing off against the winner of the Coastal Division for the right to represent the ACC in the Orange Bowl or even the BCS National Championship Game.

Prior to 2010, the ACC Championship game was played each year in Florida, first in Jacksonville from 2005-2007 and then in Tampa in 2008 and 2009. Given the lengthy travel required to get to Florida from most ACC markets and a lack of local interest, the early years of the ACC Championship were roundly considered less than a major success. With the change in venue in 2010 to the heart of ACC country in Charlotte, NC, the overwhelming interest and success of the game first envisioned by the  fans and promoters finally became a reality with the 1st ever sellout of ACC title game tickets in the games history. With the majority of ACC schools within a 4 hour drive to Charlotte and a huge local ACC following, attendance and anticipation for the Conference Championship game is expected to continue to rise. While no definitive plans have been made for the future location of the ACC Championship game, it is widely anticipated that the Charlotte will be named the permanent home for the future ACC Championships.
